How castor oil actually works for hormones

Published 3 months ago • 4 min read

Hey there!

Welcome to part 2 of this email masterclass on The Truth About Castor Oil for Hormone Balance and Women's Health.

Today we're going to be looking at how castor oil actually works to support hormone balance.

And in order to do that we have to take a closer look at the traditional uses/benefits of castor oil, so that we can see how they correlate to our hormones.

Let's get to it!

Benefit #1: Alleviates Constipation

The FDA approves the use of castor oil as a stimulant laxative for severe cases of constipation.

This ability to promote elimination is beneficial for anyone with hormonal imbalance because constipation and hormonal imbalance often occur together.

And in general, 1-2 bowel movements is considered ideal for overall health.

Less than 1 bowel movement a day means the toxins that contribute to hormonal imbalance stay in your body where they continue to create chaos.

Benefit #2: Supports Digestive Function

Alternative practitioners who use castor state that it activates the parasympathetic branch of the nervous system (aka the "rest and digest" system).

The rest and digest state is where we want to spend most of our time because that when the body is able to find its natural harmony.

Unfortunately though, most of us live in a stressed out, "fight or flight" state (which is the sympathetic branch of the nervous system).

When fight or flight dominates, just about anything in the body can start to fall apart.

In particular, blood flow to the gut is reduced when we're chronically in fight or flight. Reduced blood flow to the gut contributes to a host of digestive issues (including bloating and difficulty breaking down certain foods).

And even worse, when digestive function is impaired, the body struggles to properly absorb nutrients.

So, you could very well be eating healthy foods and taking supplements...but you're not absorbing much from them!

Therefore, it's important to ensure that the body is actually absorbing the nutrients it needs to make hormones, break down hormones, get rid of waste and so on.

Benefit #3: Supports Lymphatic Function

The lymphatic system is part of our detoxification processes.

This intricate system transports lymphatic fluid - which contains waste - into your bloodstream and then your liver (and kidneys) does the cleanup work to filter that waste out of your blood.

So, as you can see, the work that the lymphatic system does occurs before the liver's work.

This means if the lymphatic system isn't functioning properly, there's no hope of truly detoxing and removing hormone disruptors from the body.

Benefit #4: Anti-inflammatory

Science has shown that the active ingredient in castor oil - ricinoleic acid - is a powerful anti-inflammatory, as noted in this direct quote from a research paper:

Observational studies indicate that topical application of ricinoleic acid (RA), the main component of castor oil, exerts remarkable analgesic [pain relieving] and anti-inflammatory effects.

This matters for your hormones because inflammation plays a role in hormonal imbalance.

To understand why, you first have to understand what the body's inflammatory response actually is:

  • Inflammation, is the body's natural response to any kind of stress (be it food-induced stress, emotional stress and so on)
  • When the inflammatory response kicks in, the body releases anti-inflammatory hormones - cortisol, adrenaline and more.
  • This response is only supposed to last for a short time. But in our modern world, this response often becomes our regular state of being.

It's also important to note that the inflammatory response is part of that "fight or flight" system that I mentioned earlier!

So, anything we can do to lower inflammation automatically supports our well-being!

Alright, that completes our deep dive into how castor oil supports hormonal balance.

As you can see, there's a lot going on with this oil.

And before I wrap up, there's one more bonus benefit...

It's taken me a long time to take castor oil seriously because I've always questioned whether it really can at activate the rest and digest system or reduce pain.

Then I found an old article from the Journal of the American Medical Association. In that paper, a doctor shares the story of how he - and another colleague - had been successfully treating facial neuralgia with castor oil.

Neuralgia is "intense, typically intermittent pain along the course of a nerve, especially in the head or face."

If you've ever experienced any kind of nerve pain, you know it's no joke. Needless to say I was shocked to learn that castor oil has sufficient pain relieving or relaxation ability to help with something this serious.

And what's even more fascinating is that the paper was dated April 21, 1900!!!

Obviously the rules around what doctors can and cannot prescribe have changed significantly since then (the article reference is below if you want to search for it).

So, What Next?

Stay tuned for my next email on Tuesday where I'll walk you through the correct way to use castor oil.

You don't want to miss this email because improper use of this oil can create a host of other issues.

I'll give you all the details on Tuesday.

In the meantime, enjoy your weekend!
